| Hey Kris Guess what?? I got a $1.00 "Isabella pledging her jewels"(To finance Columbus' second voyage) is, of course, Scott #241. This is Brian's scan but I'll scan it up all proper like when I get it- probably today or tomorrow! Eeeek!! I'm so excited!! ha-ha!! It's mint, Original gum- has a thin and damage to right side, but I believe it still commands respect; as only 250,000 were ever made (Quantity minted is listed in decimal so I think I got that correct? 0.05 m) and most of those was either un-purchased and destroyed or just damaged through the ravages of Father Time! We are very lucky to have one in any shape! |

| Got the actual statistics here: http://www.theswedishtiger.com/241-scotts.html
| Quote: |
Issued: Jan 2nd 1893 but first placed on sale at the Columbian Exposition on Jan 3rd 1893 Plate Size: Sheets of 100 subjects (2 panes of 50)
Printer: The American Bank Note Company, thereafter, with one exception of the Overrun stamps of 1943 all stamps have since been printed by the Bureau of Engraving
Watermark: None
Quantity Issued: 55,050
Interesting Fact: There are no complete panes of any of the dollar values of the Columbian left. Despite the fact that at the time many dealers and well off collectors purchased the stamps in complete panes. There are, however, full panes of the plate proofs going around, all fakes of course (they sell on eBay for $30 each) |

I actually managed to run across a "broken hat" variety. It looks great in my vario collection! I still need a few tickets to finish the Exposition theme I'm doing as a side project. I have shown some of it here in this thread actually, in an earlier post. I also recently picked up the $1 Scott #241. If I haven't scanned it yet I will do so in a little bit! (I just noticed it's in the post above this one) Cheers!
P.S. Has anyone thought about maybe collecting exposition stuff besides the related stamps? The ephemera like tickets (my avatar is from the 1876 centennial exposition) and other souvenirs? It's great fun and almost makes you feel like you was there! A wonderful story and a trip through time! |

| My Columbian Exposition set:
The "Broken hat" vs. the regular issue so you can see the flaw better: I re-sized these but for some reason it isn't taking hold? I'll wait a little bit and try it again if it don't adjust by itself. |

| So how can you tell the difference between the broken hat vs. normal variety on the 2c anyway? I have several copies of that stamp and I don't know how to check them. |
