Why not start with beautiful racing yachts?

It is interesting to note the evolution in boat and sail design.

The original cup was an ordinary silver trophy offered by the Royal Yacht squadron to the winner of a race around the Isle of Wight in 1851. The race was held as part of the enthusiasm that had built the Crystal Palace for the Great exhibition in 1851 (by the way, the Crystal Palace one of the largest buildings of its type ever built was designed by a gardener!)

Commodore John Stevens of the New York Yacht Club had the yacht America designed, constructed and sailed across the Atlantic. Designed by George steers, America was completely innovative and an English naval architect was reported as saying: " If she's right, then we are all wrong."

He was proven correct in that America easily won the race held on the 22nd of August 1851 under the watchful eyes of none other than Queen Victoria.

Six years after winning the cup, the owners of the Yacht America deeded the trophy to the New York Yacht Club - hence it became known as the America's cup (after the yacht not the Country)

Many challenges have followed since 1857 by many teams, but it was not until 1983 that the cup was finally taken away from the NYYC by Australia II.
