Scott US 425 on cover
Issued: Sept 5, 1914
Designer: C.A. Huston
Vignette Engraver: M.W. Baldwin
Frame/Border Engraver: R. Ponickau
Letter Engraver: E.M. Hall

Postmarked: Winfield, NY

Contents:

East Winfield, N.Y., Nov. 5/15

Dear Mother:
We got here all right and have been awful busy ever since I came. The work was all here as Clyde worked on the sink and cellar door all he could Sunday. Today he is going to try to finish the pump and sink and get some of the other jobs done around here. The rats are raising the old Harry in the cellar and we have got to tie things up, etc.

I am enclosing the dollar. Don't think I had better send for the paper now as work is scarce. If it picks up I will see later. Am also sending the Headaele stuff in the mail and the first of the week I will...

Another Scott US 425 on cover

I did some searching around the 'net for James F. Needham, Grand Secretary and found the following

"Peter Ogden was the founder of the Order of the Odd Fellows among Negroes of the United States. He had joined the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows of England, and secured a charter for the first Negro lodge, Philo Iethean, No. 646, of New York, which was set up March 1, 1843. Negro Odd Fellows in America are under the jurisdiction of England and are regularly represented in the general meetings of the Order."

Reference: Negro Year Book: Annual Encyclopedia of the Negro 1921-1922 by Monroe N. Work of the Department of Records and Research; Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute

Listed under "Grand Officers" is:

Grand Secretary, James F. Needham, N.W. Cor. 12th and Spruce Sts., Phildelphia, Pa.

No information on Nola E. Simms was readily available but you're welcome to look yourself!

Appears to be another Scott US 425 on cover. Very little information with this cover. The last name appears to be "Berne" of "Sweetsborrough" or "Sweetsbourough" in New Jersey. Trying several variations on the spelling failed to turn up a location in NJ. Postmarked from Trenton, NJ on July 30, 1915 with a peculiar "I R" in the postmark. Not sure what that means.

Postmarked from Poughkeepsie, NY on February 12, 1915 this small envelope was addressed to Mr. Robert Wilson in the Keenan Building; Troy, NY - Room 9.

As of December 8, 2011 the Keenan Building was up for sale for US$790 thousand should you be interested.

Scott US 424 on cover

First of several covers addressed to Miss Dorothy Wolverton of Stockton, New Jersey. I found a few listings for a young lady with this name born in 1895 and living in Stockton, NJ. The age would be about right as the return address was from "Maxey Hall; Brown University; Providence, RI" so mail from some young man in college to a certain young lady in New Jersey makes the age about right.

Unfortunately none of the covers have their contents intact.

Another cover to Miss Wolverton but this one postmarked from Easton, Pennsylvania and no return address. Interestingly the sender seems to have penned a possible alternate spelling of her last name as "Wolverstone" of which I could find no information.

Possibly a new suitor?

This cover is addressed to a Mr. Hugo Altschwager who was born on August 22, 1863 in Teterow, Guestrow, Mecklenberg-Vorpommern, Germany. Herr Altschwager immigrated to the United States from September 5 to October 11, 1876 and entered the United States at Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he died on April 11, 1930.

He was a cashier at the Blatz Brewery in Milwaukee and later, according to subsequent census information, was a bookkeeper at the bank and later a bookkeeper in a drug store.

The correspondence appears to be in reference to a $50 transaction of some sort.
