PostSubject: Need help with Four Flags   Wed Jul 11, 2012 9:39 pm

Does anyone have a copy of one of the 2012 Four Flags U.S. stamps (Freedom/Liberty/Equality/Justice) from the booklet pane of 10? These are Scott Nos. 4673-4676.

I would be interested in seeing a high-resolution image of one of these stamps. Since they were printed by Avery, I presume the size and microprinting are the same as on the coil stamps (die cut 8.5) printed by the same company.

If I'm correct in my assumption, then I haven't found any of these yet. If I'm wrong, I'd appreciate being told that--and instructed on how to identify these particular stamps! (I think I've got the others figured out.)

Thanks, Bear. I'm actually looking for a sample from the booklet pane of 10 stamps; the perf./die cut sizes are apparently the same for all of the booklet stamp varieties of this issue, but I understand that the stamps from the pane of 10 are getting separate numbers in the Scott catalogue, which would suggest there's something different about them.

My suspicion from the fragments of information I've been able to find online is that the difference is probably in the microprinted "USPS," which is located in the bottom white stripe in the curve near the right side of the flag.

My guess is that on the stamps from the pane of 10, the "USPS" is probably larger than on the stamps you scanned, but I haven't actually found a stamp that looks like what I would expect.

Thanks for scanning what you have, though--if I find a copy of the additional variety, I'll post it here so everyone can see.

Man, is this my day or what? Those are the very same stamps I'm using over and over again on my Postmark Pursuit cachets. So far though as best as I can recall I've been picking them up in 20s but I do need some postage tomorrow and will see if I can lay hands on one of each.

I read somewhere that they will be 5 varieties of that stamp. I cant remember if its 3 different sheets and 2 different coils or 2 different sheets and 3 different coils.

So when you thought you only have to collect just the set of 4, now its a set of 4 of 5 different varieties, 20 different stamps.......affraid

The pane of 10 brings us to six different varieties of each (24 stamps total), if I'm not mistaken.

The coil varieties are easy: die cut 8.4, die cut 9.4, and die cut 11.

The booklet varieties are (from what I've been able to find) all die cut 11¼×10¾. On one of the pane of 20 varieties, the flag measures 18.5 mm from lower left corner to lower right corner; on the other, the flag measures 19 mm from lower left corner to lower right corner.

And then there's the new pane of 10 variety (assuming that it is indeed different in some way).

Makes the Washington-Franklins look kind of easy...okay, maybe not, but this is getting a bit ridiculous!

You are correct, there is a sixth variety...... Why do we need so many????

Here is some info I found on the APS website.

After looking at the website, there are 3 varieties of the Aloha Shirts. We going to need an album just for the 2012 US stamps......

For those who are interested in such things, I finally found one of the Four Flags stamps from a booklet of 10. Whoop!

Here's a quick primer on how to identify these stamps for any fellow flyspeckers out there.

Die cut 8.4 vert. (Scott 4629-4632), coils of 100 printed by Avery Dennison

Die cut 9.4 vert. (Scott 4633-4636),
coils of 100
printed by Ashton-Potter

Die cut 11 vert. (Scott 4637-4640),
coils of 100
printed by Sennett Security Products

Now, each of those three companies has also produced the stamps in booklet format. All of the singles are die cut 11¼×10¾.

Die cut
11¼×10¾
(Scott 4641–4644), booklets of 20 printed by Ashton-Potter: small microprinted USPS; flag measures 18½ mm from lower left corner to lower right corner

Die cut
11¼×10¾
(Scott 4645–4648), booklets of 20 printed by Sennett Security Products: small microprinted USPS; flag measures 19 mm from lower left corner to lower right corner

Die cut
11¼×10¾
(Scott 4673–4676), booklets of 10 printed by Avery Dennison: large microprinted USPS

I saw on the Virtual Stamp Club website that Ashton-Potter is also producing booklets of 18. It's unclear at this time if singles from those booklets will be different that singles from the booklets of 20.
