PostSubject: Topical Collections on the Cheap   Sun Jul 01, 2012 1:17 pm

Those of you who know me from this forum know I have a mantra, "Stamp collecting doesn't have to break the bank." With that thought process in mind I have an idea to put together a small topical collection or two and spend as little as possible.

It doesn't get any cheaper than a 1¢ stamp. The current 1¢ U.S. stamp is the Scott USA #3749 stamp which is part of the American Design definitive series. The series includes stamps with face values of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 cents.

I went to the USPS website and purchased two sheets of 20 of the 1 and 2 cent values (a whopping $1.20 worth of stamps) and dissected one sheet and kept the other intact. I then made a couple of DIY cachets and included the Tiffany Lamp stamp on them.

The cachets will be posted tomorrow and I'll update with some scans when I get them back. Unfortunately I couldn't find a post office in a city or town named Tiffany so I'll simply post them from a nearby post office. I have no idea where I'm going with this small topical collection but I think what matters is I'm going!

Now to put something together for the Scott USA #3751 Navajo Necklace stamp. Hopefully I'll be able to find a post office on a Navajo reservation for the postmark. Like I said... it's a learning project!

They are self-adhesive stamps, Aamer... which I don't mind saying with great contempt... I loathe self-adhesive stamps.

Totally agree, Bear. But the sad truth is you have to accept them or stop collecting beyond their introduction. It's a truly sad state of philatelic affairs IMO.

oh i agree they "serve the purpose" but from a collector of used stamps, almost exclusively, i hate having to leave certain stamps on paper and trying to get some of those off is far more work than is needed if its even possible!

everyone is entitled to an opinion
