I came across this small grouping of 1913-23 stamps for sale on a S. African auction site. I do not know the seller so bid at your own risk. They are listed at about 50% of my catalog value (255 Rand is about $33). Sad If I had the cash on hand, I would probably give it a shot.

The aution closes at the end of this (June).

Would love to add those to my collection, but at the present, budget is blown and might be for the next two or three months. Maybe moving in with the other half and will have to put a fair bit of stuff into storage. Not the stamp collection though!

I'd recommend buying Admirals at any opportunity, especially in groups like this. Sellers are notorious for mis-identifying them (several printings, several perfs) Smile

Also take into account that the auction is in S.Africa... in my personal experience I have never recieved anything in return for payment from Africa. Even if the listing is legitimate the stuff gets stolen in the mail and I have even had my numbers stolen. Just be super cautious when dealing with that sort of thing; Now I'm not saying anything bad about Africans, but a lot is to be desired when it comes to their postal and monetary systems. Take it for what it's worth but just be very cautious. Good luck.

Hi there, I am from South Africa. When you buy on Bid or Buy, you have the option to have the stamps sent by registered mail - its supposed to be guarantee delivery.

Very nice stamps, I agree - is that an area that you collect, Stampdays?

50% of catalogue value for used stamps?
Is that the norm?

Yes it's possible, it all depends on the seller. I, for one seldom refer to catalogues when I sell online though. Just plain laziness I guess Razz

Like indestore said it does depend on the seller. However most retail dealers don't even sell at catalogue. Me I frequently get mint at face and/or 15-35% of catalogue and the same goes for used.

In my experience, dealers try to get 50 percent, as a rule of thumb for good material, but recognize that most stamps have flaws, such as poor centering of perforations, thins, heavy cancels, etc. and discount further accordingly.

Imagine a broad bell shaped curve going from zero to 150 percent, and probably peaking out around 30 percent, with the position of an item on the curve dependent on stamp condition, popularity, mode of sale, number and types of stamps included in the lot,and how they are presented. I'm sure I left out some variables as well.
