Slovakia made it also for WW Cup, 2010 - some kind of PVC (2D effect) that is absolutely NOT suitable for mail service.

Even that I didn't hear, that it (this "stamp") made any trouble, I'm sure that on automatic cancel machine that will be great problem.

This "block" are really fat, hard, not elastic and try to apply cancel on it!

What is need to made this "mobster" I don't know - for sure, it is not Philately!

Strikes me as more of a debit/credit card than anything.

This is an interesting point you bring up. how does one define Philately?

The free dictionary.com defines it as
Quote:
(Non-sporting Hobbies / Philately) the collection and study of postage stamps and all related material concerned with postal history
[from French philatélie, from philo- + Greek ateleia exemption from charges (here referring to stamps), from a-1 + telos tax, payment]

since this is intended as postal material and once issues has become postal history it certainly fits the criteria.

some collectors are dead set against CTO's and do not consider them collectible while others only collect CTO's..

same for Covers, postmarks, Cinderella's, postcards, back stamps, and the list goes on.

What is philately? Simple...

Your collection, your interests, your way. Mint, used... CTO, commemorative only.. topical or national... new or old... covers, blocks, precancels, PNCs & perfins... all and more are game for collecting.

If you come by a lot of old covers - are they more enjoyable simply as old covers or old covers with the contents intact? Do you keep the cover and discard the contents? Of course not... without the contents there was no need for the cover. Both are collectible and a matter of conjecture as to what you want to call it.

All of us are part of what is still the first generation of plugged-in stamp collectors - we're the first to combine collecting and the internet. IT'S not a game changer... WE are the game changers. WE use email, Facebook, Ebay, forums and so on to communicate and transact business and WE are part of the change of the landscape of what we know as "mail". It shouldn't seem too big a step to imagine our actions - and the actions of a billion and a half other internet users - will also help re-shape the face of philately.

So back to the original question: "What is philately?"... I think the better question is, "What isn't philately?"

According to my little knowledge philately and stamp collecting are two different things.
one is study about stamps (there history, error and other stuffs, doesn't need any collection)
second one is about collection (like me doesn't care much about other then collection)
