| Four of Major League Baseball's most revered Hall of Famers return to Cooperstown, NY, to a stamping ovation July 20 at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in the form of postage where they will be immortalized on 45-cent First-Class Forever stamps. Appearing on the Major League Baseball All-Stars sheet of 20 stamps will be Joe DiMaggio of the New York Yankees; Larry Doby of the Cleveland Indians; Willie Stargell of the Pittsburgh Pirates; and Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox. "Some of America's favorite pastimes come together with these stamps," said U.S. Postal Service Stamp Services Manager Stephen Kearney. "Writing letters, collecting stamps, and, of course, playing and watching baseball are all important elements of our Nation’s culture and history. We are honored to be able to commemorate four of baseball’s most important players. Fans of these Hall of Famers and their teams will enjoy rooting for them once again by using and collecting these cool stamps." The stamps were designed by artist-illustrator Kadir Nelson of Los Angeles and are based on historic photographs. Phil Jordan of Falls Church, VA, served as art director. |

| Baseball, Basketball (you guys have NEVER thanked us for that one!), Hockey, etc... all of them are predominantly regionally based. Hockey does have national teams for which Canada participates religiously at all levels and so does the United States. As for a world cup type of event for baseball or basketball, I have no idea. Hockey there are numerous cups. _________________ Ignorance isn't bliss... it is just ignorance.

| Baseball is known as "America's Pastime". Children play t-ball first at about the age of 4 or 5 years old... then onto softball and then boys move onto baseball and girls continue to play softball. With me so far?
A boy may play baseball well and eventually find himself in the "Major League" or MLB (Major League Baseball). There are ... I forget exactly... about 30 baseball teams... even in Canada. Pretty much the same thing with baseball.
The MLB team that wins the World Series (a best of 7 games) is the "world" champion.
I kind of think that sucks because there's really good baseball outside the US and Canada... most notably most all Latin American countries especially Cuba as well as good ball in Japan and Korea as well. |

| My apologies there aamer... my comment there was directed to the yanks in the audience, Basketball is a huge sport down there and they have yet to thanks us for giving it to them. Strangely enough the national sport here was Lacrosse for the longest time till they changed it to Lacrosse for the summer and Hockey for the winter. _________________ Ignorance isn't bliss... it is just ignorance.

There is a World Baseball Classic that started in 2006. 16 countries were represented. Japan was the winner of that 1st one. In 2009, Japan also won the 2nd Classic. The next one is scheduled for 2013, and the number of teams/countries will expand to 28.

You must remember that the United States is in a way a confederation of 50 semi-autonomous states and amongst American athletic teams the rivalry is often between the states. Michigan vs. Ohio State instantly comes to mind.
This also applies to cities as well... for example I live near New Orleans so I pull for NO teams... and always pull against teams from Atlanta, Houston and Dallas.
You know us Americans - all too often we get it in our head we're the only ones on this planet... |
