I'm all about not breaking the bank to build a nice, comprehensive national collection and a good example are Scott numbers 112, 113 & 114. Including shipping I paid US$43.88 for all three stamps yet they have a catalog value of US$275 - that's a purchase price just under 16% of CV. My standing rule is to never pay more than 22% of CV for stamps - recent issues I pay face plus 15% at most.

By applying this method to auctions I lose a lot of auctions but on the upside I don't over pay either and sooner or later if I'm patient enough - and I am - I'll end up with the stamp I want at a price I can live with.

... and one more example of getting stamps at a good price. The Sc#240 has a CV of US$180 and I got it for US$28.05 including shipping (I always include shipping as part of the deal - it's still out of my pocket)... that's 15.6% of CV!

Greetings Mr. bengalpaws
.
Good looking classics. We both have just about the same little fellows in our albums.
.
There's a slight typo on your 938am post. I think you meant your 156 should be identified as Scott 147.
.
I agree with your reasoning on evaluating the stamps you purchase. Of course, I might have a different opinion if I were selling stamps. That's a fair price for that Recall stamp. Good buy.
.
Respectfully,

Gordon Lee

Thank you for the pic stomp Bengalpaws !

I had a few bundles of old USA stamps I bought a long time ago (it was sent to me with other bundleware in a cigar box) which I never got to identifying. I'll bring them over when I go home tomorrow and see if I can spot them here Smile

I don't know about that, Gordon Lee, according to my copy of the Scott Catalog #156 is a 1 cent issue and #147 a 3 cent issue. Even if I have the #147 wrong - which I don't think I do as it's a quite common issue... it's for sure not a 156.
